This Weekend – “American Dating Catastrophes”

By Steve Briody

Good friend John Blenn and his comedy team “Middle Class American Productions” will be providing plenty of laughs with their new show “American Dating Catastrophes VIII”.  The fun-filled night will take place this weekend at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College.  Blenn is an extraordinarily talented writer, and the previous shows were huge successes, so BE SURE NOT TO MISS this one…tickets are still available, but may not be for long.      -Regards, SB

Chronicles tribute to Eric Clapton: Friday, 4/30/2010 at DHPAC

DHPAC/Dix Hills Performing Arts Center presents
A Tribute to Eric Clapton with Chronicles
Friday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Five-man veteran band recreates ‘Slow Hand’ hits from Clapton’s early discovery by Jon Mayall through his brilliant solo career— and everything in between

The Dix Hills Performing Arts center will present Chronicles in an authentic tribute to the career of blues/rock guitar legend Eric Clapton on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Chronicles is a band intent on re-creating the music of Eric Clapton – from his early days with John Mayall and the Bluesbusters, the Yardbirds, and Cream to later stints with Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, up through his Grammy-winning solo and acoustic careers.

Aptly named for EC’s 1999 “Clapton Chronicles” anthology album, the band features veteran Long Island musicians George Clinton, Donny Waller, Bobby Simons, Ricky Panzica and Steve Stewart. Continue reading

Shakespeare on Long Island: Macbeth at DHPAC/FTC

If you search around the web, you will find articles lamenting the lack of Shakespeare: Not enough chances to see Shakespeare; and too many students who have never seen a Shakespearean play. Even more reason to come check out the Five Towns College Theatre Department production of Macbeth on April 15-18, 2010.

Brendan Cayton as Macbeth. Mary Jane Newmann as Lady Macbeth.

DHPAC/Dix Hills Performing Arts Center presents an updated version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This Five Towns College Theatre Department production of the classic Celtic drama is an ode to ambition and vanity. It will be staged April 15 to 18, 2010 at DHPAC on the campus of Five Towns College in Dix Hills, Long Island, New York. Continue reading

Tommy: Scenes from the set

Can’t wait for the Five Towns College Theatre Department’s presentation of The Who’s Tommy…just a few days away…opening night is Thursday, March 11th.

Since Five Towns College [FTC] is full of theatre, music, and audio technology students, it is easy to expect great things from FTC productions, including set design. Add into the mix that Tommy is directed by Professor Adam Karsten, who is known for his stylish productions, and you can expect a big WOW! for the Tommy set.

Here are some of the images in progress, that I collected on three different days of the set going up:

Video of Bucky Pizzarelli: In The Zone

“The Zone” was pierced, right here in Dix Hills, Long Island, New York. Quick interview with jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and host, Five Towns College Professor Peter Rogine. Learn Bucky Pizzarelli’s definition and theories about “The Zone” in improv. From a performance on February 12, 2010 at DHPAC/Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College, Long Island, New York.

It’s snowing on Long Island…

Being stuck in the house due to the snowstorm has me thinking of the value of culture and entertainment.  Winter is definitely the season when cabin fever causes us to seek some fun, color and excitement on an indoor stage.

Perhaps you will take this time to peruse the offerings at DHPAC? Our schedule through May is posted on line, and you can get your tickets directly at the website.

The next two concerts coming up are: The Beautiful Guitar of Bucky Pizzarelli (see a sneak peak video below) on this Friday, February 12th at 7:30pm and A Tribute to Styx with Rockin’ The Paradise the next day, Saturday, February 13th at 7:30pm. (Do you remember where you were in 1981 when Paradise Theatre came out?) Continue reading
