American Dating Catastrophes 2010 invite…

Ki writes: Tonight [Friday, July 16, 2010] at 7:30pm at DHPAC/Dix Hills Performing Arts Center, you can see “Dating Catastrophes VIII”, a series of world premiere, short, comedy plays by new writers. You can get tickets at the door, by phone, or on-line: here. (If you can’t make it tonight, there is a show on Saturday night, and one on Sunday afternoon.)

I am going tonight with my hubby. He has been teasing me all week about us going on a dating catastrophe. The organizer of the event, playwright John Blenn, says that, to his surprise, a lot of people actually do bring a date, to watch other people have excruciating dates on stage.

I hope to see a crowd of folks attend to support John Blenn, Middle Class American Productions, and all the new writers. There is always some extra excitement about a world premiere. Kind of like reality television for the theatre crowd.

For John Blenn’s special invitation to the show, see the video promo: here.

For John Blenn’s musings on “5 Great Reasons To See Live Theater”, see his previous guest blog post: here.

This Weekend – “American Dating Catastrophes”

By Steve Briody

Good friend John Blenn and his comedy team “Middle Class American Productions” will be providing plenty of laughs with their new show “American Dating Catastrophes VIII”.  The fun-filled night will take place this weekend at the Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College.  Blenn is an extraordinarily talented writer, and the previous shows were huge successes, so BE SURE NOT TO MISS this one…tickets are still available, but may not be for long.      -Regards, SB

Want to see a play at DHPAC/Five Towns College?

Well…last I heard from the Box Office, we are sold out for “A Moment in Time”, the new play by Stewart Lane, with the music of John Denver.

So, if you want to see something at DHPAC, what’s next?

Well…lots of music coming up. See the full Calendar of Events: here.

And, as for theatre…

Well, compared to “A Moment in Time”, this show is something “completely different” — in a Monty Python sort of way. Though, it includes several world premieres, and it is going to be really, really good:

“American Dating Catastrophes VIII” is a series of short plays by new writers, which zero in on the ups and downs of modern dating. This show is presented by Middle Class American Productions, Long Island’s only, all-original, comedy theatre. A show worth seeing. An idea worth supporting.

Show times:

Friday, July 16th at 7:30pm
Saturday, July 17th at 7:30pm
Sunday, July 18th at 2pm

Tickets and info at the Box Office website, or call the Box Office at (631) 656-2148.

Coming up: Fun musical theatre – The Full Monty

On Thursday, April 29th through Sunday, May 2nd, Five Towns College Theatre Department will present The Full Monty at DHPAC/Dix Hills Performing Arts Center. The show is directed by Adam Karsten.

In this absolutely hilarious musical, based on the Americanized version of the 1997 British film, six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers decide to stage a strip show at a local club after they witnessed how enthusiastic their wives were for a touring company of Chippendales. As they get ready to perform for their friends and family, the men realize all of their own fears in a whirlwind of comedy in which you can’t help falling over with laughter.

The Full Monty was nominated on Broadway for Best Musical, Best Musical Score, Best Choreography, Best Direction, and Best Book of a Musical.

The music in The Full Monty takes you on a fun, pop-inspired contemporary journey of self-discovery with the most ridiculous moments in musical theatre!

Please note that THE FULL MONTY contains adult language, partial nudity, and is intended for mature audiences. (Know any mature audiences who would enjoy a good laugh?) Continue reading ‘Coming up: Fun musical theatre – The Full Monty’

Reflections on a rehearsal of Macbeth

I was able to get into the Wednesday night dress rehearsal of Macbeth for a short time. I came away understanding the unique style of this performance.

The set design, lighting, and costumes work very well to create the feel of mystery, fate, and nature. Continue reading ‘Reflections on a rehearsal of Macbeth’

Sneak peak: Costumes for FTC’s Macbeth

There is a swirl of preparations throughout Five Towns College, for the production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth which starts tomorrow, Thursday, April 15, 2010.

I caught up with the Costume Crew, led by Professor Sherry Kfare, with three students sorting and sewing on the gym floor. Kristina Lodestro of the costume crew took a break to show me three of the costumes. First: A witch costume, then Macbeth, then one of the dresses for Lady Macbeth. The play is set in post-apocalyptic Scotland in the year 2020, so the costumes have a modern edge.
