Wow! DHPAC/Dix Hills Performing Arts Center has seen some great moments. I found a video titled “Mike Mannering”. Though, I think his real and/or stage name is Michael Manring. He is playing experimental music and loops on the electric bass guitar. I was struck by it instantly. The music is very real, beautiful, and unlike anything I have ever heard before.
Our Executive Director Sandy Hinden told me some of the history on how Michael Manring came to play at DHPAC. Evidently Manring is a friend of a friend of one of our professor/performers. And, that led to visits by Manring and some folks from the New Age label, Windham Hill.
A performance like this one reminds me of the magic and beauty that can happen when a talented performer takes the stage. I feel proud to be part of the team of volunteers, staff and students who create this music history, music energy, and music community here on Long Island. (Even though this one happened before I got here!)
Upcoming chances to see master guitar playing at DHPAC include:
Guitar Extravaganza: Friday April 30, 2010 and
Fall Guitar Festival: October 21-24, 2010
